It goes up, yes. How much, that depends on your provider. If it's outragiously high, he can look around for other coverage, he doesn't HAVE to keep the one he has. But that doesn't mean other insurance companys will definatly be cheaper, but it's possible.Anyway tell him to shop around, he might find something better.But yeah $7,000, that's not too surprising for someone that was DUI. Because after a conviction for a charge like that, you are now, for the next 3 years at least, a risk to the insurance company, and also probably required to do an SR22 filing with the state. That makes you assigned risk. $7 grand a year sounds a bit high, but there may be other factors I'm not aware of. So yes, it could be true.

I don't know where you live, but here in California a DUI arrest and conviction costs an enormous amount of money in terms of court and legal fees. Once all that is settled then the insurance companies get involved and the figure you are quoting doesn't sound far off at all. I think their rational is that considering the huge liability that the drinking driver presents that they need to charge exhorbitant fees to protect their interests.
